GLEN MILLS, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Severe storms on Monday night canceled or delayed thousands of flights and left more than 1.1 million homes and businesses without power across the eastern U.S.
In the greater Philadelphia region, the extreme weather was swift but certainly left a mark. Many neighborhoods are cleaning up downed trees, power lines and other damage.
Glen Mills, Delaware County was hit particularly hard. The National Weather Service in Mount Holly, New Jersey was investigating whether or not a tornado was to blame, but officials determined the weather event was just straight-line winds.
The survey team found the same to be true in New Castle County, Delaware.
The National Weather Service did, however, determine a tornado touched down in the Midway Manor section of Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.
One Glen Mills, Delaware County resident said he and his wife went down to the basement as the storm picked up. All of a sudden, they heard water gushing. A tree branch had pierced his roof and sent the rain pouring in. Massive trees also snapped in his yard.
However, there are no reports of any serious injuries across the region.
Delaware County officials said around two dozen homes were damaged in the western part of the county from the wind and falling trees.
The Phillies and Philadelphia Union games were postponed on Monday due to the weather and have been rescheduled for Tuesday evening.
