PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia schools have a new way of keeping track of students in the hallways: digital hall passes.
It allows school staff to know which students are in the halls during classes, and for how long.
Superintendent Tony Watlington said that information can be critical in averting conflicts.
“When we know who’s where, it gives us a chance to do a better job of monitoring the hallways,” he said.
Students use their Chromebooks to request permission to leave the classroom. School staff will have a readout of who’s in the hall, and a student can be denied access if there’s potential trouble brewing, not enough personnel in the halls, or if too many students are out of classrooms at one time.
Administrators also decide whether they want to print a physical hall pass.
The system is integrated with schools’ current Infinite Campus data software. The function is optional and available this year at all district schools.
