PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Thousands of volunteers are expected to participate in an annual effort to clean up nearly 100 green spaces in the city.

Maura McCarthy, CEO of the Fairmount Park Conservancy, says more than 95 Friends of the Park groups throughout the city are hosting events and everyone is invited to participate.

“This is one of the ways to not only make your own life better but to also contribute to the quality of life in your neighborhood and to show elected officials how much parks mean to you.”

Volunteers will be collecting trash, removing graffiti, weeding and planting flowers at parks throughout the city.

Among participating parks:

- Rittenhouse Square Park in Center City

- Mario Lanza Park in South Philadelphia

- Fotterall Square in North Philadelphia

- Loudoun Park in East Germantown

The cleanups are held on various days from May 13 through May 21.

Volunteers are asked to sign up for events, so organizers have enough gloves, tools and other supplies.
