PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 24-year-old Abington man remains hospitalized with serious head injuries after authorities said he was run down by a man in an SUV Sunday night. The driver has been charged with attempted murder.

According to charging documents, witnesses told police they saw a black Jeep Compass following a group of bike riders on Meyer Avenue in Glenside around 8:30 p.m.

They said the driver — 40-year-old Phillip Prince — ran a stop sign, slammed on the brakes, got out of his SUV and started chasing the group on foot before he got back into his Jeep, accelerated, crossed an opposing lane of travel and hit one of the bicyclists, 24-year-old Colin Cassidy, near Ardsley Park.

The affidavit of probable cause said witnesses told investigators Prince was driving between 30 and 40 miles per hour in his Jeep when he hit Cassidy; they didn’t see brake lights until after the collision.

Crash investigators said Cassidy was thrown in the air and ended up about 90 feet from the point of impact.

In the affidavit, a neighbor told police he heard the car accelerate at full throttle, then heard a bang. He ran to the scene and confronted Prince. He said Prince told him Cassidy had stolen the bike.

Cassidy needed emergency surgery due to severe head trauma. The Jeep had front-end damage and a cracked windshield.

In addition to attempted murder, Prince faces aggravated assault by vehicle, homicide by vehicle, simple assault and recklessly endangering another person charges.
