Philly-area bank hosting a series of contactless food drives

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — With more people now relying on food pantries, workers at a Philadelphia-area bank are cashing in a different currency to help feed families.

Volunteers from Bryn Mawr Trust bank have already hosted a series of contactless food drives on Saturdays, each one resulting in nearly 1,000 pounds of food.

“By providing something that’s simple, it allows lots of people to come out in an easy way and give back. We have branches in some of the most giving areas, when we say we’re doing something, our communities show up. Everybody’s looking for a way to do something good,” said the bank’s Tina McDonald.

She said they’re hoping this Saturday’s drives at their Roxborough and Blue Bell parking lots will also be a success.

“You just drive your car through, and masked and gloved BMT employees will be there,” she said.

They are in need of some staple items, such as canned tuna, oatmeal, and canned vegetables. All of the donated food is taken to a local pantry.

“What we’ve learned is that we can do this safely. That was the most important thing, how can we do something, give back to the community and keep everyone safe,” she added.

The drive will take place on Saturday from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., and the group is hoping to collect 5,000 pounds of food this weekend.
