PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man wanted in two killings — and whose murder conviction was overturned in a third — is now in police custody in the hospital.

Arkel Garcia, 32, was shot and stabbed over the weekend in Germantown. He is in critical condition.

Garcia was being sought for two separate beating deaths: 68-year-old Daniel Weinkopff, who was found dead in a wheelchair in Germantown last November, and another man in Fort Pierce, Florida — north of West Palm Beach — two weeks later.

Garcia was convicted of murder in 2015 for killing 21-year-old Christian Massey, a Marple-Newtown High School graduate. Massey was shot during a botched robbery of his headphones in Overbrook.

That conviction was overturned five years ago, after prosecutors said they believed Garcia’s confession was coerced by former homicide detective Phillip Nordo, who is now in prison on sexual assault convictions.

The man who wounded Garcia on Sunday told police that he was trying to protect others after Garcia shot someone along Germantown Avenue.
