PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — National Beer Day has its perks.
Front-line and hospitality workers were gifted free beer on Wednesday as a token of appreciation for all the hard work they have done during the coronavirus pandemic.
Dennis Ortiz, who works in Kensington as a hospital orderly, looked through his free four-pack assortment from a local nano brewery, My Local Brew Works.
“As a community, everybody is looking out for each other,” he said. “Everyone has common hardships and it’s nice to see that everyone is coming together and showing support for each other.”
The co-owners of My Local Brew Works, which provided the sudsy giveaway, were all set to make the leap from homebrewers to brewery owners when the pandemic hit.
“We were given the rude awakening that our plans were going to change abruptly for the past year,” said Wayne Humphrey. “So instead of getting frustrated, we focus our energies on giving away beer to the people who need it the most in our last year as homebrewers.”
Humphrey and his business partner, Tim Montague, are back on track with plans to open their brewery in Frankford this summer.
Some of the front-line and hospitality workers already pledged to show their support when it opens.
