PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia police officer died Friday night while on duty in South Philadelphia, following what officials say was a medical emergency.
The officer was identified Saturday by Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 5 president John McNesby as 44-year-old Lynneice Hill, a 24-year veteran of the force.
Authorities say witnesses found Hill unresponsive just before 9 p.m. in the T.J. Maxx and HomeGoods parking lot on the 1800 block of Columbus Boulevard.
She was taken to Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.
An emotional Commissioner Danielle Outlaw said Hill was beloved by her colleagues and married to another Philly cop.
"I've heard nothing but amazing things about her dedication and her commitment to the police department over the years," said Outlaw, "and it's just tragic how this is all unfolding, not just for us here, but for her family as well."
McNesby said in a statement, "Our friend and colleague served this city for 24 years with humility, distinction and integrity. We pray for Officer Hill’s family, friends and colleagues with the Philadelphia Police Department. The FOP will never forget her dedication and contributions to the police department and her community."
Officials haven't disclosed the nature of the medical emergency that caused Hill's death.
Philadelphia police say another officer, Officer Kevin Whetstone, also died from an unspecified medical emergency on Friday. Whetstone was a 15-year veteran with the department, serving the 39th District. McNesby said he "served his community and city with professionalism and integrity," and "was beloved by his fellow officers and colleagues."
