PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio)Philly Pops musicians have voted to authorize a strike.

About 95% of the Pops musicians union members voted in favor on Sunday. They say they are prepared to strike if necessary, to resolve what they consider to be urgent contract disputes with management.

They believe Philly Pops management wasn't transparent with them before announcing in November the Pops would cease operations in 2023.

Ellen Trainer, President of the American Federation of Musicians Local 77, said they have been trying to negotiate contract commitments with management since August.

The Pops announced its planned shutdown after more than four decades, citing declining attendance and profits, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic.

“Our own experience was 25% of our audience had gone away — not purchasing tickets,” Pops President Frank Giordano said when they announced their decision. “As I did some research and talked to people around the country, it’s a national trend.”

The Philly Pops said it will complete all performances for the 2022-2023 season.
