PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — If you get a text or email from someone claiming to be from PA Turnpike Toll Services, don't answer.
Turnpike officials say a phishing scam is targeting E-ZPass customers.
The scammers contact the customer saying they have an outstanding balance on their account and will be charged a late fee if it is not paid.
When they click the provided link, they are taken to a site that steals their payment information.
Pennsylvania Turnpike spokesperson Crispin Havener says they first received reports of the scam Sunday afternoon.
Similar scams have been reported by toll agencies across the country over the past several days.
Havener says they do not contact E-ZPass holders for payment via text.
People who receive a fraudulent text can file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
You can check your E-ZPass account through the official PA Turnpike E-ZPass website or the PA Toll Pay app.
