PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — With visitors from around the world heading to our city in 2026, managers at Philadelphia International Airport are hoping ongoing improvements will make a good first impression.
As 2026 takes wing, upgrades worth a half-billion dollars are landing at the airport.
“The focus of the $500 million is passenger-facing infrastructure,” said PHL Airport Chief Development Officer Api Appulingam.
Eight state-of-the-art restrooms opened in 2025 with eight more sets opening next year. Appulingam also said waiting areas are getting new chairs and carpeting.
“We’re updating the seating to include charging outlets because we know that’s really important.”
She said the airport will see Allegiant Airlines begin service in 2026, while American Airlines will launch new routes to Budapest and Prague. This summer, the airport will also roll out World Cup viewing lounges. The airport also has a new yearlong art exhibition featuring the work of students from Constitution High School. Senior Jessica Cesar’s art highlights the sound of Philadelphia.
“I always loved music. So I combined it with the city of Philadelphia.”
For five years in a row, PHL has finished at the bottom of J.D. Power’s customer satisfaction surveys for large airports. With the upgrades, Appulingam said the airport aims to climb out of last place in 2026.
“That is our goal and that is our hope.”
