PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The man accused of running off with a gun believed to be used in a police-involved shooting is now in custody.
Police say 42-year-old Jose Quinones-Mendez was arrested by officers on Race Street, just east of Broad Street in Center City.
Earlier this week, officials released surveillance footage of the fatal shooting of Alexander Spencer, who was killed by police Friday night. The video shows two PPD officers on patrol go inside a corner store in Fairhill and approach a group of men.
It then appears to show Spencer lifting his sweatshirt before a struggle between him and the officers ensues. Investigators say a shot was fired and the bullet went through the leg of one of the officers.
Police say the other officer, 33-year-old Raheem Hall, fired one shot at Spencer, who later died at the hospital.
After the shooting, investigators believed Quinones-Mendez grabbed Spencer's gun and ran off with it.
