UPDATE 4:17 p.m.
NEWTOWN SQUARE, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Authorities in Delaware County say police shot and killed someone Wednesday night during a traffic stop after a police officer was pinned between cars. Another person was also injured.
Authorities said around 11:15 p.m., Newtown Township police tried to pull over a Nissan Altima with Delaware plates at Brookside and Ashley roads. The driver initially stopped but then kept going.
During the pursuit, the driver, 27-year-old Jerry Long, hit a couple of cop cars and, at one point, lost a tire. Police say he was driving on a suspended license and had two outstanding warrants.
Eventually, on Bryn Mawr Avenue, near Malin Road, the car stopped. An officer got out of his car, and Newtown Police Capt. John Newell said Long trapped him.
“Pinned the officer between the suspect vehicle and the police vehicle,” he said. “Subsequently, the officer fires a service weapon and struck the passenger in the vehicle and the driver in the vehicle.”
Long survived and is stable at the hospital. The passenger, a 28-year-old woman, was killed. The cop suffered minor injuries.
As for why police stopped the car in the first place, Newell said it was believed to have been involved in a police pursuit a few weeks back in Radnor Township, in connection with residential burglaries.
Long is being charged with aggravated assault of a police officer, fleeing or attempting to elude an officer, and related charges.
The Delaware County District Attorney’s office is investigating the shooting.
