PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police have identified the University of Delaware student killed in Tuesday’s crash.
Officials say 24-year-old Marina Vasconcelos, of Northeast, Maryland, was struck by 22-year-old Gordon Turner in a U-Haul van on Main Street as he was trying to flee police.
The van was overdue by a month. A rental that late is considered stolen. When police found it, they tried to arrest Turner and a passenger, but he jumped into the van and sped off.
Officers did not pursue him, but officials say he lost control of the van and struck Vasconcelos, a graduate student at the university, along with another graduate student and multiple parked cars before they arrested him. At least five people inside two of those vehicles were injured.
Police found a handgun inside the van. The passenger was also arrested.
Turner, a fugitive in Georgia, Pennsylvania and Maryland, now faces murder charges and other offenses.
A memorial on Main Street has grown with flowers and messages asking the school to elevate crosswalks and install speed bumps.
