PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The Philadelphia Police Department and Medical Examiner’s Office are investigating the discovery of human bones in Fishtown Sunday night.
Police were called to Penn Treaty Park around 5 p.m. after someone walking along the Delaware River reported seeing what appeared to be human bones.
Officers and the medical examiner verified the discovery.
“The bones that were found, which were a femur and tibia — that is the upper and lower leg bones of a human — were in fact found at this location,” Police Inspector D.F. Pace said.
Investigators believe the bones likely belonged to a person who had been dead for a while. More work is needed, however, to answer key questions.
“It’s unclear whether or not there was a criminal incident that precipitated this,” Pace said, “nor do we know whether it is a male or female, nor do we know the race. However, they do appear to be the bones of an adult.”
