PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are investigating two separate break-ins that ended in gunfire Tuesday night in North Philadelphia. In one incident, the offender was killed, and in the other, the homeowner was wounded, authorities said.

The incidents took place within a few hours of each other and about 2 miles apart.

The deadly shooting happened around 10:30 p.m. in the area of 21st and Diamond streets. Police said a man with a plumbing wrench broke the door handle and lock of a house on the block. He is believed to be the ex-boyfriend of one of the two women who were inside, investigators said.

At some point, at least 13 shots were fired. When officers arrived, they found the man down on the curb. He was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

As police were investigating, they saw a man acting suspicious and trying to quickly leave the scene. A gun was recovered and he was taken into custody, police said. The women in the house were questioned as well.

Earlier, around 8:30 p.m. in the area of Germantown and Indiana avenues, a man came home to find a man who had broken into his house and taken his air conditioner units, police said.

During the confrontation, the burglar shot the homeowner in the leg and ran off, officials said. The victim was taken to the hospital for treatment.

No one was arrested.
