PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia police officer fired his weapon at a suspect who shot another man in Hunting Park Monday night, authorities said.

It started around 8:30 p.m. at the Sunoco gas station on North Broad Street, near the intersection of 16th and Lycoming streets, in Hunting Park.

Officers responded to a report of a man with a gun. There, they found several men arguing. Investigators said the group then crossed the street, toward Jerome Street, where the argument escalated.

According to police, a 29-year-old man shot another man. One of the responding officers witnessed the shooting and returned fire, but the suspect was not hit.

The officer chased the suspect on foot and apprehended him a block away, officials said. Investigators said they recovered the suspect’s gun under a parked car.

The victim was shot in the chest and groin. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition. No police officers were injured.

Charges are pending for the 29-year-old suspect.

The 36-year-old police officer — a nine-year veteran of the force — has been placed on administrative duty, as is protocol for police-involved shootings. Investigators said “portions” of the incident were captured on police body-worn cameras.
