PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police have identified the carjacking suspect shot and killed by officers Monday night following a high-speed chase on Roosevelt Boulevard.
Officials say it all started around 7 p.m. when Jerome Cooper, 51, approached two people inside a Toyota Camry sedan on G Street and Hunting Park Avenue. They say the 32-year-old owner of the vehicle was shot in the abdomen, before Cooper stole the car and fled the scene.
Officers then pursued Cooper around Lawncrest. Police say he fired on them from the car as they gave chase.
The chase ended when the suspect drove onto the median and into a tree in the middle of Roosevelt Boulevard near a Pep Boys. He exited the car with a firearm, and that’s when police say seven officers opened fire on him.
Cooper was taken to a nearby hospital, where he died. According to officials, the 32-year-old Camry owner is in critical condition.
All seven officers involved in the shooting have been placed on administrative leave, pending the outcome of an investigation.
A 29-year-old man that police say witnessed the carjacking and exchanged gunfire with Cooper before the chase is also under investigation.
