PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia police shot and killed a 39-year-old man in Kensington during a shootout Thursday afternoon, after authorities say he fired shots at a an officer at least twice.
The incident began around 1:30 p.m. near B and Stella streets in Kensington.
Sgt. Eric Gripp said uniformed officers in an unmarked vehicle came upon a stopped car and honked for the driver to move. After he didn't, one of the officers got out and approached the vehicle.
"Saw an individual inside who was holding a handgun in one of his hands," Gripp said.
Gripp said the man looked up and seemed to be caught by surprise. He then fled in his vehicle.
Gripp said the man soon after crashed the car near Ruth and Somerset streets. An officer went after the driver on foot.
"From what we have from surveillance footage and body cam footage at this time, it appears that the offender fired at least two shots at our police officer, our police officer fired at least two shots in return striking the male," Gripp added.
He was taken to Temple University Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The officers were not injured.
