PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A Philadelphia police officer shot and killed an elderly man in West Philadelphia Tuesday morning, after officials say the man fired a shot.

Police were called to the area of 55th and Webster streets around 7 a.m. for a report of a person with a gun. There, officers approached an armed 75-year-old man, identified as Anthony McKinley, on a front porch. According to investigators, the call came from a phone registered to McKinley.

Authorities said McKinley was brandishing a gun and raised it in the officers’ directions, prompting them to take cover. Officials say those responding officers commanded McKinley to drop his gun multiple times.

Instead, police said McKinley fired his gun once, though the direction of the shot was unclear. That’s when investigators say a 26-year-old female officer from the 18th District fired one shot and hit McKinley.

Officers seized his gun, a Taurus revolver, and took him to the hospital. McKinley was pronounced dead around 30 minutes later.

None of the officers, nor any other civilians, were injured. Police body cameras did capture parts of the incident. The officer who fired her weapon has been placed on administrative duty, per department policy.

Investigators said they don’t know who shot first, whether it was the man or the officer.
