PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A police officer shot a knife-wielding man in a North Philadelphia home early Wednesday morning after responding to an incident, authorities said.
It happened around 3 a.m. at a house on Bailey Street, near Montgomery Avenue and 26th Street. Officers were called to the block for a report of a person screaming.
According to police, the two officers heard commotion coming from inside the house. They knocked on the front door and a little girl let them in.
Once inside, investigators said they discovered a woman on the floor and a man with a knife standing over her. The officers repeatedly ordered the man to drop the knife, but officials said he jumped over a couch and lunged toward them. One of the officers then discharged his weapon, striking the man in the chest.
The 31-year-old man was taken to the hospital, where he remains in critical condition. He was later identified as Keith Freeman and charged with aggravated assault and gun offenses.
The 30-year-old woman was not injured, nor were the officers.
Officials said the entire incident was captured on body-worn cameras. The 26-year-old officer who fired his weapon — later identified as Officer Nicholas Jones — has been placed on administrative duty pending an internal investigation, as is police protocol.
