PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A federal judge is letting the Philadelphia president of the Proud Boys out of jail pending his trial on charges stemming from the violence at the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.
Federal prosecutors called Zach Rehl a danger to the community and argued he should stay behind bars. They say he is not charged with any destruction or specific acts of violence, but they argue he is responsible, calling him an organizer and leader of the events at the Capitol.
Rehl’s lawyer, however, argued Rehl served honorably with the U.S. Marine Corps. He has a family, including a wife who is expecting their first child. And, other than “two DUIs and some misdemeanors,” he has no considerable criminal history.
Rehl will have to stay behind bars for at least a few more days until that decision is reviewed by a federal judge in Washington, D.C.
If and when he is released, the judge said he will be on house arrest with GPS monitoring.
Rehl is charged with conspiracy; destruction of government property, and entering a restricted building.
