NEW JERSEY (KYW Newsradio) — A person and a dog who were bit by a fox in Gloucester Township last week are under treatment for rabies exposure.

Camden County officials say it happened on Nov. 8 while the dog, its owner, and a relative were walking. The fox approached and attacked the dog.

The relative tried to separate the animals and that’s when the fox bit them. Animal control captured the fox, which was euthanized. Test results show the fox had rabies.

A rabies booster shot was given to the dog. It will be under confinement and observation for four months.

Camden County health officials say although rabies is a serious illness, it can be prevented with early treatment. Seeking immediate medical attention if scratched or bitten by a wild animal is strongly advised.

They encourage every pet owner to make sure vaccinations are up to date and remind everyone to avoid contact with unknown wildlife.
