PHILADELPHIA(KYW Newsradio) — Philly has a new summer hangout in the city.
Reading Terminal Market unveiled its new pop-up plaza just in time to brighten up the space, welcoming World Cup fans and America 250 celebrations. As everyone looked to the ceiling, colorful lights flooded Filbert Street outside of the Reading Terminal Market for the grand opening on Tuesday.
Annie Allman, CEO of Reading Terminal Market, said by 11 a.m. each morning, the transformation will be complete, thanks to an over $1 million investment in lights, a new paint job, and entertainment from Thursday to Sunday.
“Every day for the next 55 days, we’re closing Filbert Street, turning it into a pedestrian plaza every morning,” Allman said.
“We’ll have bar service, beverage service, and games.”
Like many who’ve been to the market, 12-year-old Iliana and her mother are excited about the doubled seating capacity.
“That will be so cool,” Illiana said.
“That’s amazing, you cannot find a seat anywhere, it’s completely packed,” her mother added.
John McNichol, President and CEO of the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority, guarantees it will be a blast.
“Come here to the plaza,” he said. “I think you’re going to have a great time.”
