PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Philadelphia's Reading Terminal Market received some special recognition from a national publication.
USA Today named the market the "Best Public Market in America" on its "10 Best" site. The site presents a variety of lists in travel and lifestyle categories, from restaurants to resorts.
Annie Allman, CEO and general manager of Reading Terminal Market, said being named the best by USA Today is a huge honor.
"The original list of 20 was put together by a panel of national travel and food writers, which is really exciting because that means we're already on that level on that radar," she said. "We always knew we were number one, but it's amazing to have that validation."
Allman believes the market's longevity, lasting 128 years in its original location, is part of their popularity.
"In some cases, we even have the same merchants," she added. "The Basset's ice cream family was one of the original tenants and have been there throughout."
While she is thrilled that Reading Terminal was recognized, Allman said she's also happy for the others named around the country, following a year of struggle through the COVID-19 pandemic.
"We're so thankful that so many markets have managed to remain vibrant and keep going through all of this."
