PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — After more than a year of being tethered to the house, “revenge travel” is on the rise.
More than 450,000 people in the Philadelphia region are projected to travel this Memorial Day weekend, according to AAA Mid-Atlantic, which is nearly 60% greater than last year.
And, 94% of those travelers plan to go by car.
“Many people today, in light of COVID-19, feel like traveling by car is the safest option,” said AAA spokesperson Jana Tidwell.
She said people are willing to drive a little further than they normally would due to the pent-up demand to travel.
While driving is the preferred method, the recent Colonial Pipeline cyberattack means you’ll be paying more at the pump.
“Unfortunately for motorists this year, we will see the highest Memorial Day gas prices since 2014,” said Tidwell.
Due to an anticipated 2 million drivers on the roads between now and Monday, the Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission is asking drivers to be more mindful than usual of their driving behaviors.
The agency is also suspending road work until Monday night.
