Mental health professionals advise people to take social media break as election anxiety rises

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Some Philadelphia-area therapists say they are already seeing an uptick in patients and appointments as a result of having to wait for the outcome in the presidential election. And they're warning that stress can lead to medical issues.

From election season to the wait for a presidential winner, many of us are way too inundated with outside stress factors right now, said Mark Sigmund, a therapist at Retreat Behavioral Health in University City.

"With the 24-hour news cycle and the overstimulation of everything, we're not designed for that, and it can really take a toll. It can actually wear down your immunity where you're more likely to get sick" he explained.

The stress of waiting for election results can lead to both short- and long-term health problems such as anxiety and depression.

"Short-term stress now can continue to exacerbate that and it can be significant stressors for folks and impact how they're functioning, life at work, socially, at home," explained Kyle Holsinger, executive director of Delaware County Professional Services.

The adrenaline and cortisol going into your system can also increase your blood pressure, added Sigmund.

Sigmund said these stresses can also be relapse triggers for people fighting substance abuse.

They both recommend walking, talking, and meditation for those who need a break, as well as staying away from social media and TV updates.

Sigmund said during this time of waiting, it's also good to have a support system.
