PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A little more than a week after a popular Old City movie theatre was shuttered for fire code violations, it’s back open just in time for Labor Day weekend.
In an Instagram announcement that’s been greeted with elation by fans, the Ritz Five Theatre said it’s back to regular programming after a 10-day closure.
On Aug. 25, the city posted an order to cease operations on its door because of fire and other code violations that had been unaddressed for months.
Philadelphia’s Department of Licenses and Inspections reported the violations in March. The venue needed an electrical permit to install a fire system with a shunt switch for audio equipment, and fire-retardant curtains and drapes that also needed to be moved away from exits.
It was given until April 22 to make the necessary changes, but it failed another inspection on Aug. 11.
Now, it’s back in business. Some of the movies showing this weekend include “The Odyssey,” “Spider-Man: Brand New Day,” and “Tony,” a biographical dramedy about Anthony Bourdain.
