Road closures set for Philly Bike Ride and No Kings protest on Saturday

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — About 6,000 bicyclists are expected to participate in a 20-mile ride on the car-free streets of Philadelphia on Saturday. There will be rolling street closures throughout the day in portions of South Philadelphia, Center City, around the Art Museum area, and along Kelly Drive.

This is the fourth annual Philly Bike Ride — and it’s a ride, not a race. Participants are encouraged to ride at their own pace. Spokesperson Danielle Berman Ruiz said the event not only showcases the city but raises awareness for bicycle safety.

“We really designed the event to be enjoyed over the span of a few hours, so there’s rest stops along the course, there’s music, photo stops. It’s really about seeing the city in a unique way and enjoying yourself and the group of people you are there with,” she said.

The ride starts at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday at 22nd Street and the Benjamin Franklin Parkway and goes through Manayunk. The finish line is in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum, where a festival will go on until 2 p.m.

There are also street closures for the No Kings rally taking place that afternoon. Demonstrators are expected to again protest against the Trump administration.

Starting at 12:30 p.m., participants will march down Market Street from City Hall to Independence Hall. A rally will take place on Independence Mall from 1:15 to 3:30 p.m.

The city said depending on the crowd’s size, additional streets around the protest could be closed if needed to ensure public safety.

The following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 3:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, and will reopen no later than 2 p.m.:

Eakins Oval in front of the Philadelphia Art Museum
Benjamin Franklin Parkway between Eakins Oval and 20th Street
Kelly Drive between Spring Garden Street and 25th Street
Spring Garden Street off-ramp exit at Eakins Oval

The following streets will be closed to vehicular traffic beginning at 6:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, and will reopen no later than 12 p.m.:

Benjamin Franklin Parkway between 20th Street and 15th Street
Arch Street between Benjamin Franklin Parkway and 15th Street
N. 15th Street between Arch Street and Penn Square
Market Street between Penn Square and 5th Street
Penn Square between Market Street and 15th Street
5th Street between Market Street and Race Street
Race Street between 5th Street and N. Christopher Columbus Boulevard
Christopher Columbus Boulevard between Race Street and Christian Street
Christian Street between N. Christopher Columbus Boulevard and 22nd Street
22nd Street between Christian Street and Benjamin Franklin Parkway
Kelly Drive between 25th Street and Falls Bridge
Falls Bridge between Kelly Drive and MLK Drive
MLK Drive between Falls Bridge and Black Road

The following SEPTA bus routes along the course will be detoured from their normal routes beginning at 5:30 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18:

2, 4, 7, 9, 12, 16, 17, 21, 23, 25, 27, 31, 32, 33, 38, 40, 42, 43, 44, 45, 47, 48, 49, 57, 61, 124 and 125

The following streets will be closed beginning at approximately 11 a.m. until approximately 1 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, for the assembly area: 

John F. Kennedy Boulevard from Juniper Street to 15th Street

North Broad Street from John F. Kennedy Boulevard to Arch Street

The following streets will be closed beginning at noon until approximately 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, for the scheduled march: 

Market Street from Juniper Street to 5th Street

The following streets will be closed beginning at approximately 1:15 p.m. until approximately 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, for the rally: 

500 Market Street

SEPTA bus routes through the Center City area will be detoured from their normal routes beginning at 10 a.m. on Saturday, Oct. 18, through approximately 4 p.m.
