PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — For fans gathered at the Gayborhood’s Cockatoo, cheering on a local drag queen in the finals of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” is like watching the Eagles go all the way to the Super Bowl.
“We need to grease all the polls because when Sapphira gets the crown, we’re taking over Broad Street!”
That fan is gushing over Sapphira Cristál, who is competing in Season 16 of “RuPaul’s Drag Race.” Fans can watch the finale together at Cockatoo Friday at 8 p.m.
Fans are confident that Cristál, who lives in Kensington, will not only survive the final round but sashay her crown right back home to Philly.
Friend and fellow drag queen Calliope said this is an empowering moment for Philly’s LGBTQ community.
“Philly has such a diverse scene dominated by Black trans people, and to have that kind of representation on TV, finally,” she said enthusiastically.
Whether or not Cristál wins the crown, Calliope says she is the people’s queen.
“It’s a love letter to Philadelphia and she’s going to take the crown home, so boots.”
The Season 16 finale of “RuPaul’s Drag Race” airs on April 19 at 8 p.m. on MTV.
