OCEAN COUNTY, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — Scammers are targeting residents near the Ocean County wildfire.
Authorities issued a warning Friday, saying scammers are going door to door, charging money to remove the “smoke smell” from homes.
Officials said the scammers charge up to $30,000 and pressure residents to sign loan agreements for the so-called services, claiming the costs will be covered under a FEMA disaster emergency and the New Jersey State Emergency.
The Forest Fire Service clarified that FEMA hasn't issued a disaster declaration for the Jones Road Wildfire and urged residents to contact local authorities if they suspect any suspicious activity.
