PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A 27-year-old security guard contracted to work with SEPTA is recovering after someone shot and injured him while aboard a Market-Frankford Line train Thursday afternoon.

A SEPTA spokesman says just the guard, who has not been publicly identified, was shot one time, just after 3 p.m., at the first stop, Arrott Transportation Center (4700 N. Frankford Avenue).

Police say he is in critical but stable condition. No information has been released about the suspect, but a weapon was recovered.

It's not clear what led to the shooting, said the spokesman.

The injured guard works for Scotlandyard Security, one of three private security firms SEPTA has contracted with. To help curb an uptick in violence, SEPTA in May 2022 deployed more than 80 of these guards, called “outreach specialists,” to act as eyes and ears for police, discourage crime and help riders feel safer.

They ride the Broad Street and Market-Frankford lines and walk the Center City SEPTA concourse. They don’t have weapons, but they have cell phones, which they use to alert SEPTA transit police of suspected illegal drug use, people fighting, or someone in medical distress, when they see it.
