CENTER CITY (KYW Newsradio) — Work is underway to upgrade SEPTA’s 11th Street ‘L’ stop, but it will soon close for an entire year while the job is being completed.
The work to add elevators and make the 11th Street Station fully accessible will last until next August. Riders can keep using the stop until it closes for the year on Sept. 5.
At a ceremonial groundbreaking Thursday, SEPTA GM Scott Sauer said the job will entail more than elevators.
"Work includes structural repairs and waterproofing, new lighting, floor and wall tiles, modern communication systems, and new wayfinding," he said.
Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission Executive Director Ariella Maron said the $44 million project was necessary.
"ADA improvements are a lifeline for those in wheelchairs and mobility aids, and they also make the system more usable and dignified," she said.
Until the work is finished, riders will have to use the 8th or 13th Street stations. When the project is finished next year, Sauer said the only station remaining in need of upgrading is Spring Garden.
