SEPTA Board approves budget that doesn't cut service and holds the line on fares

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — The SEPTA Board has signed off on next year's budget, which calls for no fare hikes and no service cuts.

SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer said service could be affected in future years without predictable transit funds.

"As we work to secure a sustainable funding solution, we're also investing time and resources to develop our vision for what SEPTA can and should be,” he said.

The $1.8 billion operating budget uses the second year of a two-year, $400 million capital fund transfer that Gov. Josh Shapiro approved last year to avoid deep service cuts.

SEPTA's $921 million capital budget includes money for new buses and more full-length fare gates. The transit agency's fiscal year begins July 1.

"Our focus right now is on continuing to deliver for the city and region in the coming weeks, but we are building toward something much bigger,” Sauer said.
