PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA bus riders will soon notice signs that reserve a space for the youngest passengers.

The transit agency is rolling out designated “stroller spots” on 120 buses, on Routes 23, 25, 32, 49, 58 and 84 by the end of April.

A video on SEPTA’s website tells passengers to look for a blue decal showing a person with a stroller on the exterior of the bus. The stroller spots are also identified by blue signs inside the bus as well.

The size of the spaces vary by bus, but the strollers will be confined to a maximum 26-by-36-inch area. Adults will be able to take the seats in front of or behind the stroller spot. SEPTA says adults still should engage the brakes and hold onto the stroller during the trip.

According to SEPTA, the stroller spots can also be used for luggage and other oversized items, or for standing room — although anyone occupying the spaces for those uses would have to yield them to strollers.

The first buses equipped with stroller spots are already on the roads.
Meanwhile, SEPTA says parents can still bring strollers onto older buses, so long as they keep the aisle clear by lifting the necessary priority seats toward the front of the bus.
