SEPTA takes real-time train and bus updates down from website and app

Transit agency says temporary move was made out of an abundance of caution

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — You can't get real-time transit information on the SEPTA website or app for the time being, and SEPTA officials said this would be the case until further notice.

SEPTA spokesperson Andrew Busch said removing real-time updates on train and bus arrivals was done out of an abundance of caution.

"We thought that the right step to take was to proactively take those tools down for any potential vulnerability," he said. "We don't have any reason to think specifically that we had any vulnerability or anything had been compromised."

Busch said it wasn't clear what was at risk of being hacked, but SEPTA is confident it wouldn't have affected payment systems or transit operations.

"We know that there isn't any kind of sensitive information that would have been accessed. This would have been purely customer-facing information."

You can still find static schedules online and up-to-date bus and metro information on Google Maps.

SEPTA also said it would try to get real-time information to riders waiting at the station.

Federal cybersecurity officials recommended earlier today that organizations using the programming language PHP install security updates.

Experts said that language is used by more than two-thirds of websites. Many of them have moved certain digital tools offline in order to install security patches.
