PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA is bringing back daily bus service between Center City and the Navy Yard for the first time in more than a decade.
SEPTA ceremonially welcomed the first Route 45 bus into the Navy Yard on Tuesday, though the new service won’t actually start until Aug. 23. It will be the first time in more than a decade that buses will run between Center City and the Navy Yard seven days a week.
SEPTA General Manager Scott Sauer said the extension’s nine stops will help the Navy Yard’s 16,000 employees get to and from work on a daily basis.
“A very telling survey we conducted found that most of the workers here do not use transit, but at least 60% would if there were viable options,” he said. “Well, in less than two weeks, you’ll have that service, and we can’t wait to have you aboard.”
Navy Yard Executive Vice President Kate McNamara agreed that it will be a game-changer for workers and residents in the neighborhood.
“We’re so excited to have nine stops throughout the Navy Yard, connecting riders to major employers here, health care, parks, neighborhood destinations, and residential buildings across the campus,” she said.
The nine new stops include:
- Broad Street and Crescent Drive
- Broad Street and Intrepid Avenue
- Broad Street and Constitution Avenue
- Kitty Hawk Avenue and 11th Street
- Kitty Hawk Avenue and 13th Street
- Kitty Hawk Avenue and League Island Boulevard
- Rouse Boulevard and Normandy Place
- League Island Boulevard and Constitution Avenue
- Normandy Place at Central Green
This is part of the first phase of SEPTA’s plan to overhaul its bus system between now and next June. The first phase of the plan also includes two new routes and the extension of Route 79.
