PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — SEPTA is working to improve access for riders with bicycles, strollers and scooters.
Two-thirds of riders surveyed by SEPTA said they didn’t know its policies for bringing bikes and scooters on board. SEPTA is working not only to communicate better but ultimately to retrofit rail cars to make more room for them on transit.
SEPTA Sustainability Manager Anne Tyska said one improvement in the coming months is to have live feeds showing which trains have room for bikes.
“I can plan my trip, I can look at the map and see that there’s bicycles permitted on that train, and I can make my way there and take that train wherever I need to go,” Tyska said.
Over the next month, the peak-hour restrictions on strollers will be removed to allow them on during rush hours. And, Tyska said new buses arriving next year will have flip-up seats to make space for strollers on board.
The changes are among recommendations in SEPTA’s new Micromobility Playbook, which lays out recommendations to make transit more accommodating to riders who want to bring their bikes or scooters on board.
