PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — About 1 in 3 men and 1 in 5 women in the United States suffer from obstructive sleep apnea, and cases are growing.
New research suggests people with severe sleep apnea are twice as at risk of stroke and three times at risk of death from heart-related issues.
The good news is that sleep apnea can be diagnosed with home testing and rarely requires in-hospital testing. Treatments can be tailored to the individual, but the key points to remember are the warning symptoms: excessive snoring, waking up at night gasping or choking, and daytime fatigue.
If you have a partner who notices these signs during sleep or if you wake up feeling tired, it is worth getting checked out.
