CAMDEN, N.J. (KYW Newsradio) — A Gloucester County man has pleaded guilty in federal court to tax evasion charges.
Jose Camilo Perez Jr., 54, of Sewell, New Jersey controlled Scan Group, a Pennsylvania company that digitized medical records for health care organizations. According to court documents, Scan Group made $8 million from 2016 through 2023, but Perez didn’t claim any income from the business.
Federal investigators said he would cash checks for Scan Group at check cashing businesses rather than depositing them in either his business or personal bank accounts, then used the cash for payroll and personal expenses. Prosecutors say this amounted to $3.4 million in taxes that weren’t paid.
Perez did file an income tax form for the year 2017 in 2022, but according to prosecutors, he underrepresented his income for that year.
He now faces up to five years in prison. His sentencing is scheduled for May 20.
