PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Police are searching for a 22-year-old man they said robbed another man in Center City last month while using an AR-15 rifle. They believe he may be connected with other similar incidents over the last few weeks.
Surveillance video captured two armed men pulling up to a man on Aug. 28 around 2 a.m. at 12th and Sansom streets in Jewelers' Row. They jumped out of a gray Nissan Altima — one with a handgun, the other with an AR-style rifle — and threatened to shoot him as they robbed him.
“You'll see that the individual armed with the AR-15 is actively engaged in ripping that wristwatch off of the complainant, all while he has a gun, a rifle pointed at the man's face,” said Capt. Jason Smith with Central Detectives.
They took a diamond-encrusted wristwatch valued at $2,500 and two gold chains that are about $7,000 each.
Smith identified 22-year-old Shakur Nichols as one of the suspects. He lives in the Wilson Park Apartments in South Philadelphia.
Police said he and the other unidentified man are believed to be connected to several other similar incidents in the last few weeks, including one at 15th and Locust streets captured on cellphone video and another on 61st and Tackawanna streets.
Police consider Nichols armed and dangerous and are working with the FBI Fugitive Task Force. Anyone with information on his whereabouts is asked to call police.
