PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Residents of a newly-constructed affordable housing development in the Sharswood neighborhood of North Philadelphia will start to move there within a few weeks. The investment is designed to help revitalize the community.

Sharswood Crossing, leased by the real estate company Pennrose, stands near the intersection of 21st and Master streets.

It consists of 60 low-income housing tax credit units along three blocks, and includes a mix of apartments and townhomes with a community room.

The homes meet Enterprise Green Community standards and are equipped with Energy Star appliances.

"This community is coming back alive, and we are so happy," said Philadelphia Housing Authority Board of Commissioners Chair Lynette Brown-Sow.

"Those of you who were here for the groundbreaking in April of 2021 probably don't recognize this block. Back then, this area was nothing but a big hole and mounds of dirt and piles of trash everywhere. The streets were lined with broken sidewalks and vacant houses, and look at this now. Today we are here for a beautiful new apartment community. Within walking distance, there is a grocery store for the first time in 64 years."

The total development cost was $24.5 million.
