MEDIA, Pa. (KYW Newsradio) — Pennsylvania State Police want the public's help in finding the person responsible for a double homicide near the Blue Route in Delaware County a week ago.
Lt. Jonathan Sunderland, commander of the State Police’s Media barracks, says troopers responded to reports of a two-vehicle crash on the northbound ramp from I-95 to I-476 just before 10 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 13.
As Sunderland described on Friday to reporters, what they found was far worse than a minor crash.
“What they found were two individuals deceased at the scene,” said Sunderland, who identified the two victims as Clinton Martin and Joshua Waltz.
According to Sunderland, 29-year-old Martin was driving along I-95 northbound when he was struck by a bullet fired from a moving vehicle. He lost control and veered onto the northbound I-476 ramp, where he crashed into a disabled 2010 Chevrolet Malibu on the side of the ramp — and its driver, Joshua Waltz, who had pulled over earlier after hitting some debris on the road.
“Unfortunately, Mr. Waltz was standing at the trunk of his car. Both men were killed as a result of this incident,” said Sunderland.
Martin’s mother, Constance Newton, appealed to the person who shot him to turn themselves in to authorities.
“We used to call him a gentle giant. He was 6-foot-5, 250 pounds. He was a sweetie,” said Constance of her son.
Martin’s stepfather, Fred Newton, said the 29-year-old had just finished his shift at work and was on his way home.
“We are not going to rule anything out right now as far as a motive,” said Sunderland, “whether it was road rage or whether it was targeted.”
State police ask anyone who may have witnessed the shooting or crash to contact the Media barracks. There is a $4,000 reward for information that leads to an arrest or conviction.
