PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A man was shot and stabbed during a fight between family members in Northeast Philadelphia overnight.

Police responded to an apartment building on Martins Mill Road, near Rising Sun Avenue, in the Lawndale neighborhood around 12:30 a.m. Thursday.

There was a dispute involving three family members — a 38-year-old man and two women, ages 36 and 60. Police said the man and 36-year-old woman got into a physical fight.

“A knife was pulled, and there was also a fight with hands and fists,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small.

The situation escalated: Police said the 60-year-old woman shot the man in an attempt to stop the fight. The man then assaulted the 60-year-old woman, and she fired two more shots, officials said.

“After being shot, the [man] was able to take the gun from the female who fired the shots and then fled from the property,” Small said.

Police found the man a few blocks away on Rising Sun Avenue with a gunshot wound to his leg. They took him to the hospital, where they discovered he had been stabbed in the back as well.

He was placed in critical condition but is expected to survive.

Police took the alleged shooter and the other woman to the hospital for face and head injuries. Both are stable.

The woman who fired the shots is cooperating with the investigators, police said.

Police are gathering surveillance footage from the apartment and the surrounding neighborhood for the investigation. Police did not immediately say how the three people involved are related or what they were fighting about.
