Gunman fires at police officers during traffic stop in West Philadelphia

3 people are in custody, 1 remains at large

PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Three people are in police custody after they fired shots at officers who were inside their patrol car during a traffic stop in West Philadelphia Thursday night.

It happened near 54th and Summer streets shortly before 8 p.m. Officials said at least one officer returned fire.

After the shooting, Deputy Commissioner Krista Dahl-Campbell said the suspect who fired the gun took off, and the car they were in crashed.

Police arrested three suspects and are looking for a fourth.

So far, one weapon was recovered. No injuries were reported.

This incident comes less than two weeks after the fatal shooting of Temple University Police Officer Christopher Fitzgerald.

Earlier in February, another officer in West Philadelphia was shot and sent to the hospital. That officer is still recovering.

"It's been a difficult time for the police department," said Dahl-Campbell, "but honestly, I also look at it as a difficult time for the neighborhood. If people are willing to fire at armed police officers, full uniformed police officers, it shows a disrespect for the neighborhood and the people who live here."
