PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Some residents in the Logan section of the city woke up to find an enormous sinkhole at the end of their street this morning.
The hole opened up at 11th Street and Ruscomb Street following a water main break, stretching out into the intersection. Passing cars are forced to scoot around the hazard.
Alvin Burrows lives on the same block as the sinkhole and feels lucky for not driving his car into the ditch.
“We are actually truly thanking God that we didn’t fall there, because, again, I believe we were one of the last ones to drive by before the sinkhole appeared,” he said.
No people have been hurt or cars damaged by the sinkhole.
The hole itself is covered by about 15 2x10 wooden boards, and the water department has taped off the area and placed concrete blockades around the opening to prevent people or vehicles from falling in.
Some homes in the area lost access to water for a time when the sinkhole opened, but it was quickly restored.
Crews are expected to work on repairing the damage to the street today.
