PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Another skimming device has been found at a grocery store in Montgomery County.

Skimming devices are placed over credit card machines or ATMs and allow scammers to record and steal a person’s information. They read the magnetic strips on credit cards and often either have devices to log keystrokes or small cameras to record PINs. The cards are then duped and used to make purchases on the card owner’s account.

The latest skimmer discovery was made on Friday, May 16, at the Assi Plaza International Food Store on Welsh Road in North Wales.

Montgomery Township police said the device was installed on the cash register’s credit card terminal. It is unknown how long it was there.

On two separate occasions earlier this month, two skimmers were found on ATMs at a Wawa in Bucks County.

Customers of the stores are advised to check their account balances.

Skimmers can be quickly put in place and made to look different from other registers. Authorities said customers can protect themselves by checking if the registers are loose or look less commercially made than a legitimate credit card reader.
