PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — In the last few years, scientists have been studying the social determinants of health. Factors like income, race, ZIP code, education and social support are being carefully examined as part of patient care, and we are learning that the impact can be dramatic.

A study in the British Medical Journal found there could be an 18-year difference in lifespan based on these factors.

The researchers suggest that a scoring system needs to be developed and perfected as we learn more. This will allow us to identify and support those who are at greatest risk of a shortened lifespan.
