PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — Potent storms swept through the Philadelphia region on Thursday and dumped several inches of rain, followed by flash floods, downed trees and power lines, and a lot of issues for travelers at the airport.
More than 270 flights were canceled and nearly 400 delayed Thursday night. The problems lingered into Friday morning, with 77 cancellations and nearly 60 delays at Philadelphia International Airport as of 7 a.m.
Up to 3 inches of rain fell in South Jersey, prompting flash flooding and a slew of road closures. One of the hard-hit spots was Glassboro, Gloucester County. Rowan University said several buildings on campus had flooding.
Floodwaters damaged several cars in a campus parking lot.
“My car, at least the front, was almost submerged,” senior student ambassador Archie Kumar told NBC10.
The storms rolled through as students were moving in. Rowan officials said the school remains open, and all welcome week activities will go on as scheduled.
Homes and businesses lost power in the region as well, but the outages were not widespread.
