PHILADELPHIA (KYW Newsradio) — A bullet went through the window of a Northeast Philadelphia day care around 5:30 p.m. Thursday from a shootout that was happening outside, according to police.
Investigators told NBC10 that several people were trying to steal a parked car near the Lawncrest Rec Center, at Rising Sun Avenue and Comly Street.
“The owner of that vehicle confronted the individuals that were breaking into the vehicle,” said Chief Inspector Scott Small. “That escalated into a shootout between two groups.”
Nearly 30 shots were fired, and one of them went through the day care, where several adults and children were still inside.
“None of them were struck by gunfire,” Small said. “You can imagine they were very shaken up, they were very scared, because the bullet went through the window and went over their heads and lodged into the wall.”
The people who tried to steal the car ran off. Police believe one person may have been injured because they found blood at the scene.
